AFTER SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM...



After School Music Program offers instrumental instruction for children ages 7 – 13. Student volunteer instructors are supervised by professional musicians, who also volunteer their time. More are needed. In 2003-4, over 135 students were taught by 45 volunteers. Current enrollment is just under 150 students who receive instruction on 8 instruments, Art, and Drama. There are waiting lists for piano, violin, and flute. Activities include: 1) weekly lessons with individual evaluation and group recitals; 2) advanced training in Instrument Ensemble; and 3) participation in Songcatchers’ Concert Choir performances. An impressive piece of the program is its ongoing collaboration with the Westchester Chamber Orchestra. Projects include the Composers of the Future program, now in its fourth year. This program provides 11-14 children the opportunity to compose their own music (working with Orchestra members) which the Orchestra then performs during its annual spring concert. A unique feature which has great potential is the leadership development inherent in our program particularly with our volunteer student instructors. We have reached a turning point. To allow students and volunteers to reach their full potential, we need to hire more professional musicians to provide for a greater emphasis on pedagogy and the advancement of musical skills. concert choir choir camp after school music program kindermusik®

Songcatchers is widely respected throughout the community, as is demonstrated, by its awards from the United Way, Westchester Arts Council, and the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce, as well as invitations to perform at a variety of Westchester County events. An excellent relationship exists between Songcatchers and the local school systems – both public and private.
